The Himalayan nation's Political Landscape Witnesses Major Alliance Forged By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor
In a notable development ahead of the upcoming general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the wake of widespread and fatal young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Address Young People's Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which led to significant casualties.
"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.
The September revolt was triggered by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Terms of the New Political Agreement
According to the official agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Wider Political Consultations Taking Place
In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with several major political figures. These talks involved former prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the protests.
Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The message reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and fear-free environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
